Do Face Primers Really Work?

The answer to that question may be different for many people. But have you thought if you were using the right one? And if you were using the right one, were you applying it correctly? Let’s dive into it.

Why Is My Makeup Separating?

So let’s take it back to basic science 101. Do you remember doing that experiment as a kid mixing oil and water? And the result came out of them never blending and consistently separating. The same thing applies to makeup. In this case, face makeup.

Oil & Water Seperation

So that explains a massive reason for makeup separation. And the same result happens when we’re not wearing a primer at all. This is because our face produces oils that cause the same separation! So the way to fix this is to..

  1. Use a Primer. (for your skin type)

  2. Pair that primer with your foundation. (use the same base)

Primer vs. No Primer Makeup

Primers For Your Skin Type:

Now that’s explained let’s look at the best-based primer for your skin type, along with basic tips to avoid separation!

Skin Types

Water Based Primer

You will find water-based products with labels such as Oil-free. This means it is lightweight and won’t clog your pores and can help keep skin hydrated even under makeup, this will extend the wear of your makeup overall!

This is great for Dry and Sensitive Skin Types.

Pro Tips: Pair this with a Water-Based Foundation.

Silicone Based Primer

My favorite primer of all! Silicone base. This will fill in pores making a super smooth canvas for your face and with its waterproof properties, prolongs the wear of your makeup through any weather, along with a great setting spray. Silicone is optimal for oily skin, for the silicone actually creates a barrier so the sebum doesn’t seep through. This is a great choice for any special event or photography.

Good for All Skin Types, Great for Oily Skin.

Pro Tips: Pair this with a Silicone-Based Foundation.

(water-based primers with silicone foundations will probably look okay straight after application, but throughout the day the two will repel each other, causing your makeup to slide off.)

To some of my oily gals, your oily skin can actually mean that it is actually dry if it’s tight or scaly. Hence your body over producing sebum to compensate. If you're a dry skin-oily gal, to avoid clogged pores and inflammation I would suggest switching to a hydrating water-based primer and silicone on an eventful day.

Oil Based Primer

Oil-based primers are quite rare to find. You need a fast absorbing oil to penetrate the first layer of skin quickly, There are only certain oils that can do that such as hemp, jojoba oils etc. You want these fast absorbing oil’s because if it sits on top of the skin it will slide off along with your foundation. The correct oils will create a good prepping base for dry cracked skin.

Great for Severely Dry Cracked Skin.

Pro Tip: Pair with an Oil-Based Foundation. (will be a creamy consistency.)

Make sure you also aren’t using heavy cream to moisturize your face before application. This will sit on top of the skin as well.

You can also mix a few drops along with your “oil-based” foundation for a smoother application.

MEGA TIP: To also avoid separation, ALWAYS set your foundation with powder, and evenly! I would suggest a Velour Powder Puff.
