How To Fix Foundation, That Is Too Light or Dark
So you’ve bought a foundation, let’s say after you’ve got a summer’s tan, or was swatched by someone in a beauty store in horrendous lighting. Whatever the reasoning may be, if you’ve got concealer and a contouring shade, and you have experience highlighting and contouring. I’ve got you covered for the rest! Now let’s continue on how to correct this.
Contouring Vs. Highlighting
First It’s important to get the full concept of highlighting and contouring. I would suggest getting familiar first before trying this technique. So when you're in the dark, you can’t see things, therefore contouring takes away and adds “depth.” (For example, if you have full round cheeks, you can carve it out by contouring.)
Highlighting, the word itself explains it all! You are able to see everything in the full sunlight, therefore we use highlighting to “bring forth” features. This all applies to painters as well. This is how all artists create Dimensional Artwork. (For example, if you have hollow under eyes, you can brighten it and bring it out with a lighter concealer or shimmer.)
Too Light Foundation
If you’ve got too light of a foundation, you will want to focus on just contouring itself since the light foundation can act as a “highlight” shade. (because as rule of thumb, concealer should be a shade of two lighter than your foundation when contouring) So this actually works out not so bad!
I would recommend applying your “cool toned” contouring shade and then blending. You then can apply the warmth of a bronzer that you can build onto after. Since it would be better to build as much warmth as is needed to match your skin tone, rather than adding too much warmth.
Too Dark Foundation
Now for too dark of a foundation, You will want to focus more on highlighting. Now you’ve already added depth to your skin so now we are applying concealer where it is required to highlight the features. Easy. And then blend, blend, blend.
